The 5 feet Phenomenon

In the world of hip hop/modern dance, there are two things that either make or break a group's performance: choreography and attitude. Without precision and uniqueness, a group could lose its audience in an instant; without swagger and style, a performance could be just another 'wannabe' dance. In the case of the YouTube.com 'stars' 5 feet, the choreography and attitude were there, but other aspects of the group stood out just as much. Based on the commentary provided by various YouTube users, the race and sexuality that the members of 5 feet emitted controlled the audience's perception of their authenticity as dancers. Interestingly enough, these factors had much greater bearing on the popularity of 5 feet as YouTube all-stars than the creative elements of their performance.
