My definition of hip hop/modern

There are several ways to define this hip hop/modern genre that I've categorized 5 feet's style. My definition is solely based on personal experiences with this performance type and is not by any means set in stone. My generic definition is that hip hop/modern is a mixture of creative elements that include tutting, popping, freestyle, break dancing, and other styles that make a dance group unique. By this definition, various amateur dance groups emerged on a local level throughout Houston, TX in a well-known annual talent showcase called the Filipino Extravaganza, which started in 1998. This event came to life thanks to the Philippine Nurses Association of Metropolitan Houston to showcase young Filipino talents in and around Houston. Its purpose was also to incorporate traditional Filipino dances and songs to celebrate the Filipino culture along with modern talents of song and dance. However as years passed and new talents emerged, 'Extravaganza' evolved from a culture-focused showcase to a much more modern talent show. More and more young people came to watch hip hop/modern dancing more than they came to appreciate the Tinikling dance.

Early groups such as So Real (the original, not the So Real Cru of America's Best Dance Crew), Dynasty, Illys, and One Love debuted through 'Extravaganza' and inspired a string of dance groups that emerged in the subsequent years, including 5 feet. Many of these groups lasted more than one 'Extravaganza' show while others called it quits, joined other groups, or created new ones.
